Junior IT Operator in Cyber Defense

The Armed Forces' cyber defense is an integral part of the military defense and constitutes a military strategic resource. Cyber defense has the capability to conduct offensive and defensive cyber operations as well as to detect, identify, and counter threats from the most qualified actors. The effects of a cyber attack can have consequences for critical societal functions as severe as a conventional armed attack.

The Cyber Defense Unit is part of the Armed Forces' capability for armed combat in the cyber domain. We defend the Armed Forces' command support systems through both proactive reconnaissance activities and reactive management of IT security incidents. Our dimensioned adversaries have significant resources and high competence, which places high demands on us to protect the systems. The Cyber Defense Unit conducts cyber operations around the clock throughout the year to protect Sweden and our allies. You will work alongside senior technicians and learn methodology, tools, and reporting through practical work.

Main Responsibilities

As a junior IT operator with us, you will work in an environment designed for higher conflict levels, but we must be able to operate at all levels. Our cyber defense resources can also be used to support society during crises or other serious events. The position is demanding and varied, which requires independence and the ability to adapt. You will enter an exciting phase where you have the opportunity to influence the technical development of the operations.

Your main responsibilities:

• Development of tools and infrastructure.
• Execution of realistic attacks.
• Participate in the continuous development and improvement work of the operations.

It also includes compiling and presenting results both orally and in writing from completed assignments. Exercises and training are conducted continuously.

Qualifications

• Cyber soldier training, computer engineering in data/IT, or other education deemed equivalent by the employer.
• 1 year of work experience in cybersecurity or other experience deemed equivalent by the employer.
• Knowledge of how operating systems, encryption, and networks work, as well as being comfortable in terminal and scripting environments.
• Good ability to express yourself verbally and in writing in Swedish and English.

Desirable

• Work experience in IT security.
• Knowledge of Red Team frameworks such as TIBER-EU, MITRE, ATT&CK, etc.
• Knowledge of tools used in red teaming.
• Certifications in IT security, such as OSCP, GPEN, or GXPN.
• Experience in cyber operations.
• Work experience in the defense sector.

Other Requirements

You should not disclose that you have applied for a position at the Cyber Defense Unit to anyone other than those directly involved. The reason we ask you to be discreet with the information is that there are positions within the unit that are subject to confidentiality. Swedish citizenship is required for employment with the Armed Forces. Employment comes with a national and international duty to serve. The position has combat status, which means you must be able to handle and use weapons. This training will be provided by us. A security clearance with a background check will be conducted prior to employment. The selection process will also include psychological tests. Information about the recruiting unit:

At the Headquarters, there is the Supreme Commander and the Director General. The Headquarters has approximately 1,000 employees – both professional officers and civilian experts. As of January 1, 2023, the Headquarters consists of the Defense Staff, Operations Command, Military Intelligence and Security Service, as well as the Headquarters' Staff Department and independent supervisory units.

Employment with us means placement in a security classification. Usually, Swedish citizenship is required. A security clearance with a background check will be conducted prior to employment according to Chapter 3 of the Security Protection Act. Employment includes an obligation to be placed in wartime. The nature of this varies depending on the type of position.
